The three terms are often mistaken to mean the same thing, but the first thing you need to understand is how they are differ from each other.
Marxism is a science. It is a method, a tool using which you can study the society. It can be used to Study the different stages of human society development or different social institutions existing in a society.
Socialism is one of the stages of human society development which, as the Marxist method of society has shown, comes after capitalism. Socialism is the transition phase between two different stages of human society- capitalism and communism.
Thus, while socialism might not be fully rid of everything that exists in capitalism, it is a stage which is moving towards communism. Under socialism, production is controlled by the society under a proletarian State.
This State, representing the masses, progressively do away the imprints of capitalism, rectifies the inherent contradictions of capitalism and readies the society and its people for communism.
Communism, as the Marxist study concludes, is told to be the final stage of human society development. From the knowledge as we have today, it is tough to predict whether there can be a stage even after communism, so that is yet to be seen.
Communist society is a highly developed society, not only in terms of its prosperity but also the human relations it has been able to achieve. Under communism, the production in the society is controlled by the community.
The existence of the proletarian State, as was in socialism, is no longer necessary. Through the years in socialism, the society has learned to work in such a way that it can rely on the cooperation among human community.
Again, society has also unlearned the ills capitalist society had taught to the humans which had kept it an individual based society. Such society could be tough to imagine while living under capitalism, but it would not so be, as it moves through socialism towards communism.
The science of Marxism has not only enabled us to understand a higher stage of society which is to come but has also gave us an understanding on how it is brought. This is why the theory is revolutionary in nature.
